Escaping the Battle of Reach, Captain Jacob Keyes and his crew crash-land on an artificial ring-world called "Halo". Soon after they are attacked by several Covenant ships that had followed them from Reach. Before abandonong ship, Keyes orders their secret weapon to be awakened from cryo-sleep, Master Chief John: Spartan-117. He is the last of the super human soldiers created on Reach known as Spartans. After the fight, the Master Chief also abandons the ship, taking Cortana with him, the A.I. heart of the Pillar of Autumn. The Pillar is the Halcyon-glass battlecruiser of Keyes' and his crew. They must find out what the genocidal alien race of Covenant are looking for on the ring...
