The movie is based on the 2003 novel by Dennis Lethane. It's 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. He has long wanted to have an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but realizes that he might have been brought there as part of a plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright evil. Teddy's investigations gave him a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to particular records. Then a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland. More dangerous criminals show up and the case becomes more puzzling. Teddy begins to doubt everything - his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.
