Writer-director John Hughes died of a heart attack during a morning walk in Manhattan last August 6, 2009. The 59-year-old was in New York to visit his family. The actors that he made famous called him influential and "one of the giants" for capturing the youth market in the 1980s and '90s with such favorites as "The Breakfast Club," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Home Alone."
Hughes' comedies introduced stars like Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy and many other young performers. He also wrote the script of the popular "Home Alone," which made Macaulay Culkin a sensation.He also wrote or directed such hits as "National Lampoon's Vacation", "Pretty in Pink", "Sixteen Candles", "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" and "Uncle Buck."
Other actors who got their breaks from Hughes were John Cusack ("Sixteen Candles"), Judd Nelson ("The Breakfast Club"), Steve Carell ("Curly Sue") and Lili Taylor ("She's Having a Baby").
He was a salesman's son who took art at the University of Arizona. He used to send unsolicited jokes to Norm Crosby and Ridney Dangerfield. Then he went into advertisng. In the 1970s he became a Hollywood screenwriter. Eventually he tried to direct. He started to work with teen actors because he was afraid to work with experienced actors. "The Breakfast Club" was his first directorial job.
